JANCIS ROBINSON – SCORE VINTAGE 2020

Château Lamartine Malbec 2020 Cahors  –   16,5
90% Malbec, 10% Merlot.
Spicy fruit, damsons more on the dried- than fresh-fruit spectrum. Very correct, for a Cahors Malbec, the fruit tucked deep into the slightly raspy, dry tannins, showing the most subtle hints of sage and coffee bean and late-autumn rosehips. Black-olive bitterness brings a chewy tang and length to the finish. (TC)

Château Lamartine, Prestige du Malbec 2020 Cahors   –  17
85% Malbec, 15% Merlot.
Leafy, fresh and fragant. Silky red fruit entwines around lightly bitter, lightly stemmy, but also silk-knit tannins. This is Cahors at its best – the very essence of the appellation; eschewing oaky and extracted ambition for a sensitive, respectful expression of the vineyard; avoiding thickness, toughness and cooked-fruit overripeness; bringing  the very best side of Malbec  to the table. Bravo Ch. Lamartine (and a extra chapeau for the light bottles.(TC)

Château Lamartine, Cuvée Particulière 2020 Cahors   –   17++
90% Malbec (from their old vines), 10% Tannat; 14 months in oak.
Notable intensity of fruit, acidity and tannins. Despite the youthful severity of the wine, it has depth and vibrant energy. The fruit is ripe and glowing, peppery, super-fresh and pure. The tannins are layered: velvet, oak bark, raw cement, gunpowder. This is packed with potential, and it may well be ready to drink early than the 2019. (TC)

Château Lamartine, Expression 2020 Cahors   –   16,5
100% Malbec from a parcel of vines planted more than 100 years ago.
Creamy, mocha and blueberry-muffin aromas. Ripe blueberry juice, lots of oak vanilla and the texture and medicinal notes of not-quite-ripe sloe berries. Liquorice. Masses of dominant tannins – really mouth-drying. But it’s a baby and it’s clear those vines are delivering a wine with a lot of concentration. Time and food is what it needs. (TC)
